How do I know which direction to travel to get to my dog?

Answer

On the map screen, there is a blue arrow around the human avatar indicating the direction of where your phone is pointing to. By holding your phone flat and pointing it to the right direction you are travelling in will take you to your pet. 

By tapping the 'centre myself' button above the map type button, it puts the map in navigation mode where you are facing 'north' while the map rotates.
